1931 Harley Davidson Model DL. 750cc Sidevalve V-twin.
This particular Model DL has an interesting history: The HD was first registered on the 5th of June 1931. It changed ownership already on the 12th of December 1932 and again on the 9th of June 1936. The last registered owner of the HD was registered on the 16th of March 1940. One owner from 1940-2010.
The last owner, kept the bike during the war, right up until the 29th of March 1966 when the registration plates were given in and the HD was taken off the registry. The HD was then kept in a basement of his house and not discovered until 2010.
Everything is well documented with the original registration documents, later registration and insurance documents that accompany the bike.
Apart from the headlight and rear light, everything on this bike is original. Absolutely no repro parts fitted. The paint is original and must have been applied just before or after the war. The art deco style decal of the petrol tank is from 1934, so the best guess is that the owner at the time, wanted to change from the standard olive green to something more civilian. Most likely it was done professionally at a dealership. Small HD decals are also applied to the toolbox, battery box and front and rear mudguard.
The original green olive paint can clearly be seen underneath the black pain in several places on the frame, on brackets etc.
Mechanically, the bike is good. It was recommissioned for the road in 2010 and used sparingly by the new owner over the years. The last MOT was in 2019.
The HD is easy to start and will tick over at remarkably low revs once the engine is warmed up. The gears select easily, it will go through all 3 gears with the rear wheel spinning on the stand. There is a fabulous exhaust note from the double barrel silencer.
The Model D, DL and DLD 45Cui/750cc was launched in 1929 to take up the competition of the Indian Scout and was only produced from 1929 – 1931.
The DL was the high compression version of the 45Cui Harley Davidson, with approximately 18.5hp available compared to 15hp for the Model D.
