1954 Norton Dominator De Luxe. 500cc Parallel Twin.

This early, “bolt-up” Featherbed framed Norton Dominator De Luxe was first registered on the 5th of August 1954. It is an older restoration and belonged to the last owner for many years. It is now for sale as it became too heavy to handle.  

The Norton Dominator is a good runner, the engine sounds good and strong. There is a lovely exhaust note from the original pearshape silencers. The gears select freely with no play.

Cosmetically, the bike presents ok but there is room for improvement here and there. I would class it as an honest riders bike that can be used as is and can be improved on gradually while riding it. All the original bits that are special to a 1954 Norton Dominator De Luxe are still present: the valanced mudguards, the half width hubs, bolt-up rear frame, pear shaped silencers, Lucas headlight with under slung pilot light, Norton lettering on the petrol tank (and not the round plastic badge which came in 1955), pressed speedo panel etc.

The only parts missing that I can see are the “under tray” of the speedo panel which for some reason always gets lost and the Reynolds steering damper. A nice replica of the Reynolds steering damper can be bought in the UK.

All in all, a lovely early Dominator that you don’t see too often.
